Whether through accident or criminal intent, perhaps the most difficult of situations our State Troopers encounter are those in which children are victimized. Understandably, traumatic situations often find children distraught and desperately in need of reassurance and comfort.
The "McBear the Trooper" Program has supplied Road Troopers and BCI Investigators with a compassionate tool for use with children in crisis situations. Whenever they encounter a child in crisis, Troopers use the McBear teddy bear to establish a calming rapport with the child.
The program encourages the private sector to help the State Police in reaching out to children in need of emotional comfort following a crisis or tragedy. With financial backing from several chapters of Ronald McDonald House Charities, other corporate sponsors and several civic groups, the Trooper Foundation has been proud to support the McBear Program from its inception in 1990. Approximately 500 McBears are distributed annually.
